Building on previous experience with apartment greening initiatives, TGC undertook an ambitious pilot program in partnership with Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) with the goal to work with tenants of a selected building in Etobicoke to reduce waste and increase recycling rates. The project fits well with TCHCs Green Plan objectives, while saving money through lower trash disposal costs. This success can continue to be multiplied through an expansion of the program across its operation.
TGC staff and volunteers began the project with a
well-attended event in the apartment lobby.
In addition to the information display, distribution of free recycling
bags and refreshments, we also conducted a survey to determine the current rate
of recycling and what the tenants saw as the main impediments to increasing
that number.
The results of the survey and further meetings with tenants
revealed some very reasonable issues and concerns. TGC subsequently toured the apartment with
the Property Manager, who was extremely helpful and committed to the initiative
and addressing the concerns raised.
Several door-to-door campaigns followed, with volunteers paired
up to include tenants who spoke Somali, the first language of 60% of the
building tenants. The success of the
door-to-door visits is in large part due to the assistance of the building
volunteers. Tenants were given
information and encouragement, and advised of the improvements being made to
better accommodate recycling efforts.
The response is very encouraging, and inspires hope for the
future of recycling in multi-unit dwellings across Toronto.
Approximately 50% of Torontonians live in high-rise buildings where
recycling rates have been stagnant at 13% compared with single-family homes
where recycling rates have increased to 50%.
This initiative has great
potential to make a significant impact on the reduction of the waste
produced by the city.
